Below is a form for nominating a GLRR member for inclusion in the GLRR Hall of Fame.
Each year, the GLRR Hall Of Fame Committee meets in February to consider worthy candidates for induction into the Greater Lowell Road Runners Hall Of Fame (HOF). The Hall of Fame dinner is every spring. The process is two-part, first the nominations and second the discussion and voting.
The nomination process is open to all members of the Club, as well as the HOF committee. When the committee meets, they go through each name of nominees and discuss each candidate.
The one area in which we differ from other halls of fame, is that we don’t really have “stats” like most other sports do. Sure, we have PRs and streaks and age group competition and awards, but we’ve never instituted some hard and fast number you had to reach to get in. Our philosophy has always been this: You can serve the club in 2 ways, as a volunteer or as a competitor/participant. As a volunteer, you can help out at events, help organize events, put on events, and/or become part of the club “management”, and really take on some of the responsibility of the running of the club.
As a competitor, you help the club by being part of the team at club and USATF events. You can further contribute by being a top runner and scoring at these events. And you can be a leader as a team captain, organizer, etc.
And then there are those people who contribute in both ways, equally or not. We have always treated each path as an equal and valued contribution, for we know the effort involved in both and appreciate when someone goes above and beyond.
Can someone get in exclusively following one path versus the other? Yes, you need only look at our HOF roster, it speaks to our diversity and to our real appreciation of everything people bring to the table. I have tried to achieve some balance on the committee, men and women, old and new, so we have a valid representation for the historical part of the club and what it has evolved into today.
We recognize excellence in our members not just for running fast, but for representing the club and tirelessly offering their time and energy to help it become what it is. It is important that it be done the right way because it helps us record and remember our rich club history and reward folks for their incredible efforts.
NOTE: One other thing to add is that membership to the HOF is a high bar and designed to recognize those people who have truly excelled in their contributions to the club over an extended period of time. As in all halls of fame there are sometimes deserving folks that don’t quite fit all the criteria but are still worthy of induction. That is where we come in, to use good judgement and make the call… Thanks again for your service to this committee. Click here to see the current GLRR Hall of Fame
