Excellence in Journalism
Prior to the Internet the Greater Lowell Road Runners published a printed newsletter called Starting Lines. Dennis Conners served as editor of the first two issues before handing over to Dave Camire. Camire served as editor from 1980-1988 and from 1992-1995. Jay McCarthy took over the reins after the July 1988 issue so Camire could focus on running the competitive team. Camire stayed on as production manager until the June issue of 1992 when McCarthy relocated to Maryland and Camire again resumed editorial responsibilities. After Camire, Laura Lapierre took over the reins for five years before the printed version was discontinued. Starting Lines was recognized three times (twice under Camire and once under Lapierre) by the Road Runners’ Club of America (RRCA) as the best newsletter in the northeast. Twice it was recognized by the RRCA as the best newsletter in the US, both Camire and Lapierre were awarded the Jerry Little Award for newsletter excellent. We hope to post as many issues as we can find in electronic format. We start with the tenth anniversary issue that was published in 1990 – click here or on the image to enjoy!
