GLRR Summer Showdown 2020
Start Date: 6/30/2020
End Date: 8/23/2020
Duration: 8 weeks
Description:
This summer, GLRR will be holding a virtual race tournament! Participants will be on teams of four. Each week, each team will compete against another team. Participants will have a “handicap”, adjusted weekly. Runners who have a faster time than their handicap score for their team, while runners who are slower lose points for their team. For example, if a runner’s expected 2-mile time is 15:00, and she runs 14:30, her team gains 30 seconds. If she runs 15:30, her team loses 30 seconds. The under/over for each team’s runners will be added to decide the team score for that week and compared to that week’s opponent to determine the winner.
- Race distance is 2 miles.
- Races can be run any time Tuesday – Sunday of any given week.
- Runs must be continuous, i.e., timing continues even if runner stops to rest, walks, etc.
- Times must be submitted by noon Monday of the following week, with name, team name, date of run, and time.
- Each runner is established with an initial “handicap” based on submitted expected time.
- Handicaps are adjusted each week based on performance from prior week.
- Organizer will calculate and publish weekly results and track “standings” as we move along.
Scoring
- For week 1, each runner will have a submitted expected 2-mile time. That is the baseline they will be held against.
- Each runner will record and submit an actual time. That time will be compared to their baseline time and the difference will be their over/under for that week.
- Each team will sum up the resulting over/under and the higher team total “under” receives 2 points.
- In the event of a tie, each team receives 1 point.
- Starting in Week 2, each runner’s baseline is adjusted to the time achieved in the prior week
- The week 3 baseline will be the average of the first 2 weeks. Week 4 will be the average of the first 3 and so on.
- If a runner misses a week, their baseline will not change until they run again. For the first week, there is no penalty. Each successive week the team fields less than four runners, the team over/under will be penalized 15 seconds for a maximum of 30 seconds each week, or until a runner withdraws from the tournament. If a runner withdraws from the tournament, a substitute may be found, or “ghost” runner used.
- In case of a team of 3 runners, there will be a “ghost” runner. The “ghost” runner’s over/under will be the average of the 3 actual runners’ over/under for that week.
- In case of a “bye” week, the team will race against its own handicap. The team will receive 2 points if it beats its handicap, 0 if it is slower than its handicap.
Registration
Participants can register individually or as a team of four. Teams are a request—the organizers may move people around to make sure every team is filled. Individual registrants will be assigned teams. Each team selects a team captain and team name. Once we’ve established the teams, we’ll release a match-up schedule.
